Baptisms

In the early days of the Church, new Christians were often baptised at Easter. After a course of instruction in the faith, they publicly entered into a new life. Nowadays in our two churches baptism services, or ‘christenings', take place throughout the year and are available both for infants and adults. Indeed, more and more adults who were not christened as infants are asking to be baptised and, when this happens, baptism is followed soon afterwards by confirmation.

 

Thanksgivings

There are some people today who have little or no experience of the Church but who wish to mark the birth of their child in some special way. For such people we offer a Thanksgiving Service in church. No commitment to bring up the child in the Christian Faith is implied, but prayers are offered for those who will bring the child up, and an invitation offered to come for baptism if and when the time seems right.

 

Weddings

More than a quarter of all marriages in England today take place before God in the traditional setting of a Church of England church. Christ Church and St Mark's Church offer a choice of settings for a wedding. Marriages are times of celebration and our church organists and Parish Choir are on hand to make the occasion even more special. We can also discuss the possibility of a marriage in church for couples where a previous marriage has ended in divorce, or perhaps arrange a service of thanksgiving following a civil marriage.

 

Funerals

A funeral marks the close of a human life on earth. Friends and family need to express their grief, give thanks for the life which has now completed its journey in this world, and offer one another support. Many people feel it appropriate to hold a service in church before going on to the cemetery or crematorium, and they are welcome to come to Christ Church or St Mark's Church if that is what they would like.
